For the second year in a row, the Spanish National Honor Society and the school newspaper of the Passaic Academy for Science and Engineering teamed up to celebrate International Book Day with a special outreach activity. This year, the student volunteers expanded their impact by visiting not only School 15, but also adding School 20 to their list of participating elementary schools. There, they read aloud to young students in both English and Spanish, fostering a love of books and language at an early age.
International Book Day, also known as World Book Day, is celebrated globally on April 23rd. The date honors the legacy of two literary giants—William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes—who both passed away on April 23rd. The day is dedicated to promoting reading, publishing, and the enjoyment of literature across all age groups, while also highlighting the importance of literacy and equitable access to books.
Since this year’s April 23rd fell during Spring Break, organizers celebrated on April 2nd. The growing success of this event reflects the clubs’ continued commitment to community engagement, bilingualism, and fostering a culture of literacy that extends far beyond the classroom.
