Passaic Stands Together on International Workers’ Day

On May 1st, teachers, school staff, parents, and students gathered in Passaic and marched toward Main Avenue carrying posters, signs, and flags to honor International Workers’ Day. The event, filled with energy and unity, highlighted the importance of standing together. Though May Day began in the United States in 1886 with the fight for the eight-hour workday, it is now celebrated globally on May 1st, while the U.S. observes Labor Day in September. During the march, many participants voiced deep concerns about budget cuts and the defunding of school programs, which are negatively impacting student experiences and academic outcomes. Many raised questions on social concerns, asking tough questions about the decisions and priorities of our government leaders. My favorite chant of the day, echoing loudly through the streets, was “Justice for teachers is justice for students”—a powerful reminder of how interconnected our struggles truly are.
