Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Health Care, was pronounced dead on December 4th at 7:12 AM. The company, United Health Care, is one of the biggest health insurance companies, covering Medicare, Medicaid, and much more.
The crime began with shots being fired, hitting the victim in the calf, the back, and finally the head. The bullets were engraved with three words: “delay, deny, defend,” a term that refers to insurance companies delaying claims, denying claims, and defending their actions for these decisions.
The assassination appears to have been motivated by rage against the insurance company. The suspect, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, has been interviewed by the police and is said to have written a manifesto, a handwritten document that explains his motivations and mindset.
So far, details have not been disclosed and are being slowly released.
Update from CBS News this week:
“Mangione was indicted on a charge of murder in the first degree in furtherance of terrorism, Manhattan prosecutors announced Dec. 17. He was also charged with two counts of murder in the second degree, with one of the counts accusing Mangione of killing as an act of terrorism.”
