Behind the Scene of Linking Math with Wellness Interview

Naydelin Guzman, Assistant Editor-in-Chief

On a day like any other in creative writing class, Divya and Druh Rana had an assignment. This assignment was to create magazines based on the topic of their choice. But there was a twist the magazine must also carry wellness or/and mindfulness. Both of them created three magazines which you can all read on the SSN. When creating the magazine, Divya’s thought process was to take traces of humor and combine them with things. She loves or has experienced herself with math. This way not, only is it personal for herself and the readers. But combined with the research, the articles would be more meaningful.

Next, Dhruv wanted the topic of math because he loves math. It is a subject that he has both good memories and bad memories. There were times when he hated math and then there were times when he loved math. Math is a subject that helped him learn and grow into the person he is today. When he did the math, he had no worries about the outside world; he was at peace. He wanted others to experience this feeling and understand math, so what better way to do this than by creating a magazine dedicated to it. To add on they incorporate wellness into the magazine by showing readers the benefits of doing math on a person’s mental and emotional health. These benefits can come from just working parts of your brain through doing math problems, using math to create something creative, or having fun through playing math games to relieve stress. They knew that just stating these benefits would not attract people’s attention to the magazine. So they wrote from a perspective that addresses the reader, including personal experiences and including slight humor.

In the long run of this project, Divya would like people who might have been like her and been apprehensive about liking math more than as a subject in school to apply at least one piece of advice to their life. Maybe they will wind up loving math as much as they do or, maybe they will find something to improve their mental health – she thinks both would be a win. When the project first started, Dhruv had low expectations. He felt that it would go nowhere. It would be average at best since math is a subject that discourages many people. He felt that people would not take their advice seriously. However, now he feels that other magazines might be impactful. By the end of this magazine project, Divya would like to incorporate the tips on wellness into my own life. So she can have a first-hand experience of the advice they are giving. She would also like to share it with math teachers at the school.  So they know that their love for math is shared among students too. She hopes to improve her ability to write articles like these.  That intends to persuade and inform at the same time. Divya would like to help someone find a new way to relax or improve their academic performance.  So she knows that our efforts were not in vain.
